The SEMS Annual Return Opens This Month — Download Your Free Guide
by Richard Melis on 8 Sept 2026, 18:49:00
If you follow this newsletter, you already know what the School Estate Management Standards annual return is — we've covered it a few times.
This is the update that matters: it opens this month. Submissions open in the third week of September [1]. It closes in late November — exact date still unpublished, so the window is only about nine or ten weeks [1]. It's 28 multiple-choice questions, nothing gets uploaded, and it doesn't affect funding this time [1]. Your trust, local authority or diocese submits it; your school doesn't [1]. You knew all that.
The bit that matters now: the information behind the answers — condition surveys, energy data, maintenance plans — takes longer to gather than the form takes to fill in. Summer was project season. The next fortnight is the sensible window to pull it together, before the return itself crowds the diary.
A guide to every question
If filling in the return lands on your desk, I've put together a guide to all 28 questions — what each one is really asking, and where the answer usually already lives in your records. It's free, it's one PDF, and it's here: [Download the free guide].
Keep an eye out
The DfE hasn't named the exact closing date yet. When it does, we'll flag it here — if you don't follow the channel already, make sure you hit that subscribe button, and you'll have the dates as they land, not as you stumble across them.
That's the update. The window opens this month. Everything else is in the guide. I'd love to hear in the comments whether you're ahead of the game and already gathering your data — or whether this is the fortnight you'll be pulling it together.
Statlog....More than just compliance and premises software.
