# BREAKING NEWS: CIF open — register by 30 November

BREAKING NEWS: Condition Improvement Fund open — new applicants have until 30 November to register

The Condition Improvement Fund is open. If you're relying on it for 2027–28, the clock is already running.

DfE opened the 2027 to 2028 CIF round on Wednesday 21 October. Two deadlines matter, and they're not generous: new applicants must register on the CIF portal by 12 noon on 30 November, and every application with supporting documents must be in by 12 noon on 15 December.

Who this is for: eligible academies, sixth-form colleges and voluntary-aided schools in England — and the rule is narrower than it looks. A school gets condition funding through either CIF or School Condition Allocations (SCA) to its responsible body, never both in the same year. The dividing line: for MATs and VA bodies, SCA needs both five or more schools at the start of September 2026 and at least 3,000 pupils — smaller bodies fall to CIF. Check your confirmed eligibility rather than a simple headcount. The route is the CIF portal through Manage your education estate; DfE does not accept other application routes.

The practical priority is your evidence. Independent condition surveys must be dated 1 October 2023 or later — anything older will be discounted. A CDC2 report dated within three years can support a bid but is not sufficient on its own; most projects need additional survey data or professional evidence, plus detailed costings. If surveys or specialist investigations need commissioning, start arranging them now.
